Welcome back to Coffee Time. As we’ve been basking in glorious sunshine the last few weeks I thought I’d look at cold brew coffee.
What is Cold Brewed Coffee?
There are two methods of making iced coffee. The first is by brewing a hot coffee and then pouring it over ice cubes. This method can leave the coffee tasting bitter and watery.
Cold brewed coffee on the other hand is brewed using cold water over an extended period of time. It’s very simple to make yourself at home.
Home Cold Brew
To make your own cold brew coffee concentrate all you need is coffee beans, water and time.
57g of coffee beans
16oz of water
Coarsely grind the coffee beans. You want a rough grind. If it’s too fine you will get sediment.
Put the ground coffee into your jar and add the water. Give it a good stir and then place in the fridge for at least 12 hours and no more than 24.
You can experiment yourself with longer steeping times.
After the required steeping time take the jar out of the fridge and strain through the mesh strainer. Throw the grinds away.
Then set up your paper filter and pour the coffee mix into it. Leave it to drip through. Do NOT squeeze of try to push the liquid through.
You are now the proud owner of a cold brewed coffee concentrate. This will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. The shelf life goes down if you dilute with water.
As this is a concentrate you need to dilute with water to serve. A mix of roughly one part concentrate to two parts water should be just right.
Serve with ice and enjoy on a hot summers day.
